Fracking with Less Water

Fracking with Less Water Fracking with Less Water Fracturing with Less WaterHydraulic fracturing is a booming success story, the tool to collecting 1000000s of barrels of oil and cubic feet of natural gas from seemingly untappable underground formations. Its practice has upset global markets and boosted U.S energy production to levels not seen in decades. But its future is not guaranteed. New York state officials have banned the practice, and others are investigating its potential to produce seismic eventsearthquakesand other associated environmental risks.Fracking, as it often is called, is a thirsty process, each well consuming between three million and six million gallons of water, most of which becomes unusable and must be trucked for disposal, generally in deep injection wells. Reducing the volume of water needed or reusing it could reduce the industrial footprint of a well, along with costs, potentially making it more palatable to critics. There are several research projects at tempting to find cost-effective treatment methods, but at Ohio Universitys Russ College of Engineering and Technology, one mechanical engineering professor is moving into the second stage of a research effort targeting the treatment and onsite reuse of fracking water.Reducing the VolumeHydraulic fracturing uses water pumped into a well at very high pressure to shatter underground shale formations and release the hydrocarbons trapped within. Most of the water is recovered, but on its way back to the surface the backflow picks up the chemicals used in the fracking process along with high concentrations of salts, often in concentrations up to 192,000 parts per million. Seawater, for comparison, has a salinity of about 35,000 ppm. The salinity levels are too high to be reused in fracking, so the wastewater has to be trucked for disposal, generally in injection wells.Richard Tumbleson, a sophomore chemical and biomolecular engineering major, analyzes a flowback water sample in the lab. I mage Jill Bateman / Ohio UniversityTheres two types of water, says Jason Trembly. The flowback water is generally similar in chemistry to the fluid that stimulates the well. Most of that water can be reused after filtering out the solids. We are focused on the produced water that has been trapped within the shale seams. That takes on the characteristics of the shale itself.Trembly is developing a two-step process The first uses off-the-shelf filtering technology to gather suspended solids coupled with ultraviolet water treatment to handle bacteria and water softening systems to remove hard water ions The second puts the flow through a reactor fueled by field gas, under high pressure and high temperatures, where it is brought to a supercritical condition.Thats where the novelty lies, says Trembly. Thats where the behavior of the water changes.SupercriticalAt the supercritical state, water takes on the properties of both liquid and gas. Salts and hydrocarbons either precipitate out as solids or gasify into hydrogen. The salts can be reclaimed for uses such as road de-icing and the hydrogen returned to help power the reactor.Supercriticality is nothing new, Trembly acknowledges. Whats different is the novel reactor design. It will have a small footprint and a high throughput.Trembly says he is working toward a commercial application of 100 gallons per minute with a reactor and associated equipment that can be fit onto a flatbed truck for mobile application. Colleagues at Ohio Universitys Institute for Corrosion and Multiphase Technology are researching materials with which to build the reactor, taking into account high temperatures, pressure and the highly corrosive brine.Trembly says the project was spurred in part by local needs. Although there are not any wells being fracked in southeast Ohios Athens County, where the university is located, he notes there are many injection wells being used to dispose fracking wastewater. I want to focus my research in areas w here both industry and societal needs overlap, he says.Electrodialysis can provide cost-effective treatment of salty water from fracked wells. Source MITNew ApplicationsElswehere, Massachusetts Institute of Technology researchers believe electrodialysis shows promise in accomplishing the same goal. The process isnt new, developed over 50 years ago to desalinate brackish water or seawater, or for food processing and other uses. But it has not been used with waters of such high salinity, according the researchers. The team found electrodialysis actually works better with higher salt concentrations because water conducts electricity better at higher concentrations. By desalinating the water in stages and to levels that fall short of potable standards but enough to be reused for fracking, they believe electrodialysis has the potential to reduce costs and minimize disposal of contaminated water. Engineers still must determine the most effective level of salinity for fracking, say the rese archers. Some private firms are attacking the problem from another direction, developing waterless fracturing technology. Calgary-based GasFrac is working in drought-ridden Texas using a system that substitutes propane for water. The closed-loop system sends propane gel into the formations along with proppant, small sand particles that are forced into cracks to hold them open so gas can flow out. The gel reverts to vapor within the underground formation and returns to the surface along with the natural gas. Although initial capital costs are higher and there are increased risks for explosion, the company says drilling chemicals remain below ground and operators can recover up to 25% more product.Chevron reportedly is testing the companys process at five natural gas wells in Colorado. In Ohio, one driller is now using it in an attempt to recover oil in the Utica formation. Hydraulic fracturing for oil has had limited success in the Utica where water is retained underground, swelling t he formation and blocking water and oil recovery.Learn more at the ASME Hydraulic Fracturing Conference 2015. For Further Discussion Supercriticality is nothing new. Whats different is the novel reactor design. It will have a small footprint and a high throughput.Prof. Jason Trembley, Ohio University

3 Top Tips for Empowering Your Teams

3 Top Tips for Empowering Your Teams3 Top Tips for Empowering Your Teams Scaling organizations requires careful attention to a companys core principals and the way their teams work. Unfortunately, all too often, as organizations grow, departments begin to operate in silos and are plagued by inefficiencies that kill morale and grind product delivery to a halt. From past experience, Ive learned that the key to achieving next-level delivery velocity is an environment in whichempoweredemployees thrive, and that requires leadership focus across three key areas.Leverage lean and agile methodologies to remove organizational barriers that result in waste. Establish small teams with ownership and accountability from idea to delivery. Encourage teams to leverage the best technology and processes to maximize delivery of value to the business - avoid one-size-fits-all models that cater to the average and give teams access to tools and resources they need to succeed.Embrace rapid learning through shorter cycles and continuous delivery pipelines. Encourage teams to identify impediments and allow for time and assistance to get them resolved. Leverage the aggregation of marginal gains to receive exponential returns with minimal investment.Establish mechanisms for transparency of the portfolio, risks and alignment to ensure that teams are optimizing for the throughput of the system and not any one individual part. Minimize short-termactions that impact long-term velocity and tackle technical debt that has the potential to expand. Measure everything and establish a core set of KPIs that drive to the largest gains in velocity. When done right, operating at www scale can create an environment where groups of critical thinkers start each and every day excited about working together to make the world a better place for themselves and their customers. As VP of Engineering, Andrew is responsible for the delivery of the core services powering SilverRail s travel technology. How to Pitch an Idea to Your Boss - The Muse

How to Pitch an Idea to Your Boss - The MuseHow to Pitch an Idea to Your Boss Depending on how you present your new idea to your boss, you could be facing two very different reactions. If you want to nail that yes, you need to treat your pitch seriously- and outline solutions and a clear execution plan. Otherwise, your great idea may not see the light of day. Worse, it might end up on someone elses to-do list. With this in mind, we asked nine entrepreneurs from Young Entrepreneur Council (YEC) to share which steps you should take before walking through that door.1. Reduce the RiskWhen you pitch a project, clearly lay out in advance how management should judge its success quickly. Whats the first milestone that will indicate the project is a success? Set a specific goal- 10 new customers in the first three months, perhaps. Plan step-wise goals instead of one huge long-term one. That means management just has to invest in the first stage of the project.- John Rood, Next Step Test Prepar ation2. Prove You Can Handle ItBefore pitching your boss on leading a new project, you should be prepared to outline that your existing tasks and projects are in order. You have to show you have the time and resources to lead a new project before your boss will entertain the idea.- Phil Chen, Systems Watch3. Come in With a Clear PlanThis seems like a fairly obvious piece of advice, but I find that its not very often followed. Especially if you havent yet proven your leadership potential, an idea lacking a plan will likely be ignored. However, if you walk in with a polished plan, it will show youve put a good deal of thought into the problem, which will help convince your boss you can take charge and lead the project.- Brian Honigman, BrianHonigman.com4. Prepare to Defend Your IdeaIf Im asked to donate thousands of dollars to a company initiative, be prepared to counter my objections with reasons why we should do this. Ideas need to be able to withstand being knocked down. Be able to fight back.Kenny Nguyen, Big Fish Presentations5. Show EnthusiasmWhen it comes to speaking with your manager about leading a project, the most important tip is to be confident. Make sure to show a lot of honest enthusiasm about the project because it will demonstrate that you will be able to galvanize your team to success. Also, back up your enthusiasm with specific ideas on how you will make the project efficient and profitable for the organization.- Doreen Bloch, Poshly Inc.6. Focus on the Products PotentialMake it clear how the project will benefit the company- higher profits, an improved reputation, better contacts, etc. Be ready to answer the question What sales opportunities will your project lead to? Make sure you can demonstrate how to turn your idea into reality. Discuss the risks, and prepare a viable plan to show youre committed to the work and invested in its success.- Jyot Singh, RTS Labs7. Prepare 3 Lists of 3Bring your supervisor three lists of three items each to pi tch a new project idea. The first list should include three reasons why this project would benefit the company, the second three reasons why youre perfect to lead the project, and the last should be the three obstacles you see getting in your way and how you would handle them. These lists display planning, forward thinking, and ambition- Kim Kaupe, ZinePak8. Emphasize ExecutionChances are your boss receives new project ideas daily. Separate yourself from the other pitches by not only offering an impressive value proposition, but by demonstrating how you will get it done. If you can show that the company has bandwidth for the project, that it will make the company better, and that youve thought critically about execution, you will set yourself up for success.- Shradha Agarwal, ContextMedia9. Create Visual AidsWhen you are pitching anyone on anything, dont underestimate the importance of visual aids. Visual aids are a more powerful communicative tool than anything you could say or wri te, because they allow your boss to imagine a world in which this already exists. They make your idea real and relatable.- Adam Stillman, SparkReelPhoto of man working courtesy of Shutterstock.

11 habits of supremely happy people

11 habits of supremely happy people11 habits of supremely happy peopleWere always chasing something- be it a promotion, a new car, or a significant other. This leads to the belief that, When (blank) happens, Ill finally be happy. While these major events do make us happy at first, research shows this happiness doesnt last. A study from Northwestern University measured the happiness levels of regular people against those who had won large lottery prizes the year prior. The researchers were surprised to discover that the happiness ratings of both groups were practicallyidentical. The mistaken notion that major life events dictate your happiness and sadness is so prevalent that psychologists have a name for itimpactbias. The reality is, event-based happiness is fleeting.Happiness is synthetic- you either create it, or you dont. Happiness that lasts is earned through your habits. Supremely happy people have honed habits that maintain their happiness day in, day out. Try out their habits, a nd see what they do for youThey slow down to appreciate lifes little pleasures.By nature, we fall into routines. In some ways, this is a good thing. It saves precious brainpower and creates comfort. However, sometimes you get so caught up in your routine that you fail to appreciate the little things in life. Happy people know how important it is to savor the taste of their meal, revel in the amazing conversation they just had, or even just step outside to take a deep breath of fresh air. They exercise.Getting your body moving for as little as 10 minutes releases GABA, a neurotransmitter that makes your brain feel soothed and keeps you in control of your impulses. Happy people schedule regular exercise and follow through on it because they know it pays huge dividends for their mood. They spend money on other people.Research shows that spending money on other people makes you much happier than spending it on yourself. This is especially true of small things that demonstrate effort, such as going out of your way to buy your friend a book that you know they will like. They surround themselves with the right people.Happiness spreads through people. Surrounding yourself with happy people builds confidence, stimulates creativity, and its flat-out fun. Hanging around negative people has the opposite effect. They want people to join their pity party so that they can feel better about themselves. Think of it this way If a person were smoking, would you sit there all afternoon inhaling the second-hand smoke? Youd distance yourself, and you should do the same with negative people. They stay positive.Bad things happen to everyone, including happy people. Instead of complaining about how things could have been or should have been, happy people reflect on everything theyre grateful for. Then they find the best solution available to the problem, tackle it, and move on. Nothing fuels unhappiness quite like pessimism. The problem with a pessimistic attitude, apart from the damage i t does to your mood, is that it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy if you expect badeanstalt things, youre more likely to experience negative events. Pessimistic thoughts are hard to shake off until you recognize how illogical they are. Force yourself to look at the facts, and youll see that things are not nearly as bad as they seem. They get enough sleep.Ive beaten this one to death over the years and cant say enough about the importance of sleep to improving your mood, focus, and self-control. When you sleep, your brain literally recharges, removing toxic proteins that accumulate during the day as byproducts of normal neuronal activity. This ensures that you wake up alert and clear-headed. Your energy, attention, and memory are all reduced when you dont get enough quality sleep. Sleep deprivation also raises stress hormone levels on its own, even without a stressor present. Happy people make sleep a priority, because it makes them feel great and they know how lousy they feel when t heyre sleep deprived. They have deep conversations.Happy people know that happiness and substance go hand-in-hand. They avoid gossip, small talk, and judging others. Instead they focus on meaningful interactions. They engage with other people on a deeper level, because they know that doing so feels good, builds an emotional connection, and is an interesting way to learn. They help others.Taking the time to help people not only makes them happy, but it also makes you happy. Helping other people gives you a surge of oxytocin, serotonin, and dopamine, all of which create good feelings. In a Harvard study, employees who helped others were 10 times more likely to be focused at work and 40% more likely to get a promotion. The same study showed that people who consistently provided social support were the most likely to be happy during times of high stress. As long as you make certain that you arent overcommitting yourself, helping others is sure to have a positive influence on your mood. The y make an effort to be happy. No one wakes up feeling happy every day and supremely happy people are no exception. They just work at it harder than everyone else. They know how easy it is to get sucked into a routine where you dont monitor your emotions or actively try to be happy and positive. Happy people constantly evaluate their moods and make decisions with their happiness in mind. They do things in-person.Happy people only let technology do their talking when absolutely necessary. The human brain is wired for in-person interaction, so happy people will jump at the chance to drive across town to see a friend or meet face-to-face because it makes them feel good. They have a growth mindset.Peoples core attitudes fall into one of two categories a fixed mindset or a growth mindset. With a fixed mindset, you believe you are who you are and you cannot change. This creates problems when youre challenged, because anything that appears to be more than you can handle is bound to make you fe el hopeless and overwhelmed. People with a growth mindset believe that they can improve with effort. This makes them happier because they are better at handling difficulties. They also outperform those with a fixed mindset because they embrace challenges, treating them as opportunities to learn something new.Bringing It All TogetherHappiness can be tough to maintain, but investing in the right habits pays off. Adopting even a few of the habits from this list will make a big difference in your mood.Travis Bradberryis the co-author ofEmotional Intelligence 2.0,and the cofounder ofTalentSmart. This column first appeared on LinkedIn.

3 Reasons Email Recruitment is Not Successful - Spark Hire

3 Reasons Email Recruitment is Not Successful - Spark HireOccasionally I am contacted by another recruiter or human resource professionalregarding my interest in a new location that they are hiring for. Quite often, their method of contact is only via email, with no follow up phone call. This method of recruitment is not very effective for several reasons.1.Times have changedWhen you are hiring for a position, typically, you want to hire the best candidate in the least amount of time. This means that your recruitment process must be effective and contain a sense of urgency. In todays world, many people will go days or even weeks without checking their email. Instead of email, people now have other forms of contact that they are using such as phone conversation, texting, tweeting, and chatting on social media sites. If you want to quickly know if someone is interested in the opportunity you are recruiting for, you must find a speedy way to reach out to them. Email is not the answer.Rath er than only sending an email and waiting for a reply, you should attempt all forms of communication you have on a candidate. A phone call is the best way, because what could be better than actually speaking with the candidate? If you are unsuccessful with a phone call, begin to tackle all other forms of contact you have.2.Spam folderWith the new restrictions and rules that can be set up in email accounts, quite often recruitment emails will go directly into someones junkmail folder. How many times have you checked your spam folder, only to quickly glance through the long list of junk emails and select Delete All in order to get on with your life? I do this all of the time and it would be quite easy to overlook an email from a recruiter in my spam folder. I am sure many people have deleted behauptung emails without even realizing that it was about a legitimatejob opportunity.3.Lacks personalizationAs recruiters and human resource professionals, we work diligently to perfect our initi al emails to vermgen candidates. After all, the email is a sales pitch and we want to make it as attractive as possible, enticing the candidate to reply back or call.It is difficult to personalize an email to a potential candidate, when you are attempting to email a large number of people. Quite often, in order to save time and reach out to many people, we will craft a generalized email to send at once to a group of potential candidates. These emails lack personalization. Each person we email has a different situation or different background and these mass emails will completely gloss over this fact. There is nothing wrong with sending mass emails. In fact, I encourage that you do send these out in order to try every method possible to spread the word about the opportunity. However, I also recommend that you follow up these mass emails with a phone call, which can be more personalized. This in turn is more appealing and effective to potential candidates. What are the different recruit ment methods you use in order to attract candidates? Please share your tips and experiences in the comments below.ruf Jakub Jirsak/BigStock.com
